Over the past couple of years, I have been working at BKV and under Raphael Rivilla. During that time, he became more than a boss to me but a best friend. The picture you see is similar to the series of collages that I have done over the years for friends. This one is all about him but I did it as a wall mounted still life rather than a table still life. I have always done table collages but I wanted to include Raf’s favorite thing, surfing. Having a surf board posed me a challenge trying to make it work in a drawing.
One of Raf’s favorite things to do is surf which is why it became the focus of the drawing. The colors of the surf board reflect the water and his favorite color, red. The individual items on the surf board all have special meaning to him. I made sure to connect them together to add movement to the drawing and direct the viewer eye. The graphic letters on the right represent his three dogs – Bernie, Ella, and Charlie. I designed the letters to have a mid century look to them in order to work with the modern surfing theme I was working with.
Size: 8.5 x 11 inches
